    Course Objectives

    1. To develop an understanding of the role of computer in manufacturing
    2. To introduce hardware and software components for soft automation.
    3. To conduct study on automatic data capture systems
    4. To provide an in-depth understanding of control of manufacturing, automated material handling, storage and retrieval systems.
    5. To introduce group technology and concurrent engineering, and develop skill in the developing automated process plans using variant and generative approaches
    6. To take up case studies on FMS and CIM systems.

    Learning Outcomes

    After completion of the course, the students will be able to:

    1. Introduce automatic data capture (ADC) systems in manufacturing to reduce data processing time and facilitate automation.
    2. Apply the principles pf operation of automated material handling, storage, andretrieval systems (ASRS) and implement them in production.
    3. Apply Programmemable Logic Contollers (PLC) and pneumatics for manufacturing automation.
    4. Implement group technology concepts in production to facilitate cellular and flexible manufacturing.
    5. Develop automated process plans using variant and generative approaches
    6. Take appropriate strategy to gradually migrate from conventional manufacturing to FMS and CIM

    Course Synopsis

    Intoduction, automation principles and strategies, manufacturing operations, production concepts and mathematical models, material handling, transport, automated storage and retrieval sysems (ASRS), automatic data capture, manufacturing systems, group technology, flexible manufacturing systems (FMS), automated assembly systems, process planning and concurrent engineering.
